Who is Watching Your Videos?

Have you ever wondered where your viewers are located? Or how many are watching from a desktop, Android or Apple mobile device? Well, now you can. On July 1, iPlayerHD launched its new analytics feature that includes a lot of new data. There’s nothing you need to do to activate the feature – simply go to your Videos page and click on “Analytics” to the right of each Video.

We began displaying the data as of July 1. If you go to “Show History”, your legacy data for that Video (if any) prior to July will be displayed. If you see some data for July, you may ignore it as it will be removed soon and is not relevant.

At the top of every Analytics page is a glossary guide that will define the terms we use. Below that, you will find a statement about your video for the current month. For example:

The pages where this video is embedded have been loaded 120 times by 104 people.
71% of those people played the video a total of 80 times and on average watched 47% of the video.
98% watched the video on a computer while 3% watched on a mobile device.

This means that we know on what web page(s) the video is embedded and we track the number of times the page(s) was opened (120). We also tell you the IP address of each of the people that opened the page(s) and we give you the unique number of opens/loads (104).

We know that 71% of the 104 (74) people watched the video a total of 80 times and on average watched 47% of the video. So about six of the viewers watched it more than once.

And 98% watched the video on a computer while 3% watched on a mobile device.

Below the statement is the current month screen (July)  – in August you’ll see July and August listed. This is where all of your history will be found going forward. The current month screen summarizes this month’s data for the Video. When you click on the period you will be taken to the daily data for the Video. And if you click on the number of the day, you will be taken to a page where you may see all of the unique viewer’s data including location, IP address and device type.

It can take a few seconds to load the daily data page so please be patient.

I’ll admit the way we present the data is very straight forward and simple. Nothing sexy here.  Just relevant data simply presented.

Please let me know what you think.

Cheers.
